Moon Knight Episode 3 and 4 Review

This is a Spoiler Review of the two episodes of the Disney+ series.

Episodes 1 and 2 of Marvel’s Moon Knight introduced us to the life and world of Steven Grant and Marc Spector and how they both struggled to learn to work together and better serve Khonshu. These episodes also introduced us to May Calamawy’s Layla El-Faouly and also gave us a glimpse of Arthur Harrow’s intentions and how he was the previous avatar of Khonshu, while this show brought us some charming portrayals of characters like Steven Grant and Layla and also the alternative suit of Mr. Knight, in the end, it is shown that Harrow gets hold of the scarab and finds the location of Ammit’s tomb and Khonshu sends Marc to Cairo after them.

Episode 3: The Friendly Type

Steven and Khonshu shifting the alignment of stars

Harrow and his companions find Ammit’s tomb in the desert. While investigating a lead to Harrow’s location in Cairo, both Marc and Steven endure blackouts the cause of which is unknown to both of them. Khonshu convenes a meeting of his other Egyptian gods and their avatars to warn them of Harrow’s ambitions after failing to obtain information due to the unexplained blackouts, but Harrow successfully refutes the charge and all the other gods let khonshu go off with a warning that if he were to do anything of such sort again they would imprison him forever.

Yatzil, Hathor’s avatar, tells Marc to locate the sarcophagus of a medjay who knew the site of Ammit’s tomb. Layla locates Marc and arranges for him to meet Anton Mogart, a friend of Layla’s who owns the sarcophagus. Marc, Steven, and Layla are forced to fight off Mogart’s men and escape into the desert as Harrow arrives and destroys the sarcophagus. Grant makes a star map out of some of the coffin shards, but it’s two thousand years old. Khonshu utilizes his abilities to temporarily shift the night sky back to the correct night, allowing Grant and Layla to find Ammit’s tomb. For this, the other gods imprison Khonshu in an ushabti, depriving Steven and Marc of Khonshu’s abilities.

This episode introduces us to Gaspard Ulliel’s Anton Mogart, in comics Mogart takes on the identity of the Midnight Man a master thief who our hero has come across on a few occasions.

Episode 4: The Tomb

Marc at the tomb retrieving the ushabti

Steven and Layla come across an abandoned campsite near Ammit’s tomb, which is a maze shaped like the Eye of Horus. They discover that some of Harrow’s soldiers have been murdered by undead Egyptian priests who attack them. Layla defeats the priests, but she runs into Harrow, who claims Marc was one of the mercenaries who murdered her archaeologist father, Abdallah El-Faouly. When Steven and Marc discover the tomb, they learn that Ammit’s last avatar was Alexander the Great, and they retrieve Ammit’s ushabti from Alexander’s body.

Layla angrily confronts Marc about what Harrow told her, who explains that before Khonshu resurrected Marc as his avatar, his partner killed Layla’s father and Marc himself. Harrow arrives and shoots Marc, who awakens in a psychiatric facility filled with individuals from his past. Marc discovers Steven in a separate body trapped in a sarcophagus after fleeing from Harrow, who appears as a therapist at the hospital. Before being welcomed by a hippopotamus-headed figure, they see a second tomb with someone else confined inside.

What do we think?

Unlike the other MCU shows that have debuted on Disney+, this show has had a gripping narrative and steady pace of developing the story. The visuals and the performances of the show have been amazing with everyone doing justice to the parts that have been written for them. The show has been truthful in some sense to the source material which is a bit refreshing to see when you put this show in contrast with the ones that came previously.

What’s Next?

The next episode is the fifth episode of the series is scheduled to release on the 27th of April 2022, and we are very eagerly looking forward to finding out where Marc and Steven are currently and how do they plan to get out of there, how will they set Khonshu free and who is the third person trapped in the sarcophagus? Is it Jake Lockley? We’ll have to wait and watch!
